Seventeen people were hospitalized Tuesday night after a pickup truck and a car were involved in a collision with a bus carrying a group of girls belonging to a Maryland high school basketball team.

The collision occurred on a highway near Chaptico, Md., about 50 miles (80 kilometers) south of Washington D.C., about 9:30 p.m. local time, with the bus leaving the road and finishing up in the woods.

The bus, which was carrying 28 students and four adult passengers, was returning from a scrimmage when the crash occurred.

Those injured -- 15 students, one adult aboard the bus and the bus driver -- were taken to the St. Mary's Hospital. All students were discharged early Wednesday, according to a police statement. The conditions of the two adults were not immediately known.
