High school basketball rankings: Jan. 14

Updated boys basketball rankings as of Monday, Jan. 14:


1. Desert Mountain 15-2

2. Corona del Sol 16-2

3. Cesar Chavez 18-1

4. Mesa 15-3

5. Gilbert 14-5

6. Chaparral 14-4

7. Pinnacle 10-6

8. Carl Hayden 14-4

9. Marcos de Niza 14-3

10. Millennium 14-3

Desert Mountain ascends to the top spot with a 3-0 week, including a road win against then-No. 1 Mesa. Corona del Sol and Chavez each move up a spot, while the Jackrabbits drop to No. 4. Gilbert is back in the top 5 after going undefeated in three games last week, including impressive wins over Mesquite and Highland. Chaparral lost to Brophy but rebounded to beat Pinnacle, so the Firebirds only drop a spot to No. 6. Even though the Pioneers lost to Chaparral, it came on a last-second lay-up, so they only drop one spot. Carl Hayden sticks at No. 8, while Marcos de Niza and Millennium re-join the top-10. Dobson and Highland drop out.

3. Catalina Foothills 18-1

4. Nogales 15-3

5. Paradise Valley 15-4

6. Sunnyslope 17-3

7. Poston Butte 14-4

8. Greenway 15-3

Shadow Mountain stays at the top of the rankings, while Sierra Linda and Catalina Foothills have both won 15 straight and are close behind. Nogales turned it around to win three straight this week and is back to No. 4, while Paradise Valley drops to No. 5 after splitting a pair of games against Sunnyslope. The Vikings check in at No. 6, while Poston Butte has been playing well lately and  moves up to No. 7. Greenway moves up a spot while Coconino is back in the rankings on the heels of a 13-game winning streak. Saguaro has lost four straight, but three have come against Division I teams, and it took Desert Mountain to overtime on Friday. The Sabercats stick at No. 10.

2. Thatcher 16-2

3. Window Rock 14-2

4. Chinle 10-3

5. Scottsdale Christian 10-5

The top three teams were unblemished last week and remain in the same spots. Chinle has won seven straight to pull up to No. 4. Scottsdale Christian beat Cortez by a point but then lost to Fountain Hills by a point. The Eagles stick at No. 5 for now.

2. Desert Christian 19-4

3. Joy Christian 19-2

4. Arizona Lutheran 16-3

5. Duncan 14-3

Both of the top-two lost last week, but Yuma Catholic split a pair of games with Division I Lake Havasu and moves up. Desert Christian drops to No. 2 after losing to Division III Tanque Verde. Joy Christian, Arizona Luthern and Duncan all went undefeated last week to remain in their spots in the top 5.
