Heat sign guard Roger Mason Jr. to non-guaranteed deal
So what if there's hardly any room on the roster. The Miami Heat have added another NBA veteran.
The Heat on Friday announced the signing of guard Roger Mason Jr., a nine-year man.
Mason, whose deal is not guaranteed, joins a crowded situation in an attempt to earn a final roster spot. The Heat have 13 players with guaranteed contracts and the most they can keep is for the regular-season opener 15.
For a final roster spot, Mason must battle five-year veteran forward Michael Beasley, who has a non-guaranteed contract but seems likely to make the team unless his personal problems resurface, and forward Jarvis Varnado, who also has a non-guaranteed deal. But Varnado finished last season with the Heat and they like his upside.
Mason, 33, averaged 5.3 points last season for New Orleans. He has a career average of 6.5 with Chicago, Toronto, Washington, San Antonio and New York in addition to New Orleans.
The Heat will hold media day Monday in Miami and have training camp in the Bahamas next Tuesday through Friday.
