ARLINGTON, Texas — The Texas Rangers have signed Brad Hawpe to a minor-league deal.
Hawpe, who can play first base and the outfield, should provide the Rangers extra insurance should first baseman Mitch Moreland be slowed by his right wrist surgery.
Hawpe, who attended Saginaw Boswell High School, will go to spring training with the Rangers.
Hawpe was an All-Star for Colorado in 2009. He spent part of 2010 with Tampa Bay and hit .231 with four homers and 19 RBIs for San Diego last season. He had his year cut short in June because of Tommy John surgery on his left elbow. Hawpe, 32, is expected to be able to work at first base by spring training.
