Hawks sign veteran forward Kris Humphries

In the absence of injured center Tiago Splitter, the Atlanta Hawks needed experienced frontcourt depth for their stretch run to the playoffs.

Kris Humphries is expected to help fill the void.

Humphries, whose contract was bought out by the Phoenix Suns over the weekend, joined the Hawks roster on Tuesday, the team announced. Humphries is expected to be in attendance for Atlanta's road date with the Golden State Warriors on Tuesday night.

"As we explored opportunities to add to our team after the trade deadline, we felt it was important to prioritize experience and versatility," Hawks coach and president of basketball operations Mike Budenholzer said in a statement. "Kris is a versatile veteran with playoff experience who fits well with our group and within our system. We are fortunate to have Kris join our team and would like to welcome him to the Hawks family."

A 6-foot-9 journeyman forward capable of stretching the floor to the 3-point line, Humphries is averaging 6.5 points and 4.6 rebounds per game this season while splitting time between the Suns and Wizards. He's previously played for the Jazz, Raptors, Mavericks, Nets and Celtics.

Though a few years removed from his prime, Humphries should help alleviate one of Atlanta's biggest issues with his rebounding ability. For a team that ranks fourth-worst in defensive rebounding percentage, which has somehow not severely undercut the No. 2-ranked defense, a player that has logged a career 11 rebounds per 36 minutes is a welcome addition behind All-Stars Al Horford and Paul Millsap.

Humphries will join Budenholzer's bench alongside fellow frontcourt options Mike Scott, Mike Muscala and 7-foot-3 rookie Edy Tavares. He will be eligible for the postseason.
