COLUMBUS, Ohio – Fifth-year Ohio State senior quarterback Kenny Guiton was named the Walter Camp Football Foundation’s national offensive player of the week after throwing for 276 yards and four touchdowns in the No. 3/4 Buckeyes’ 52-34 win over California Saturday in Berkeley, California. Guiton, from Houston, Texas, and Eisenhower High School, made his first career start a memorable one by throwing for three touchdowns in the first six minutes of the game to spark Ohio State to a quick 21-0 lead. Included was a school-record 90-yard touchdown pass – the longest play from scrimmage in school history – to Devin Smith on his second throw of the game. He later hit Smith on a 47-yard touchdown pass, Chris Fields on a 1-yarder and Corey Brown on a 6-yard play and finished the day 21 of 32 with no interceptions.
When he wasn’t handing off to Jordan Hall, who carried 30 times for 168 yards and three touchdowns, Guiton was rushing it himself for 92 total yards to finish with 368 yards of offense. He led a Buckeye offense to a three-year high 608 yards, the most for an Urban Meyer-coached Ohio State team. The Buckeyes rushed for 332 yards. Guiton is the eighth Buckeye to earn national player of the week honor from the prestigious Walter Camp Football Foundation, joining LB Bobby Carpenter (10/16/05), LB A.J. Hawk (11/13/05), LB James Laurinaitis (9/10/06 and 11/4/07), QB Troy Smith (11/19/06), DT Cameron Heyward (11/8/09) and DB Chimdi Chekwa (9/12/10). UCLA’s Anthony Barr (three forced fumbles and 11 tackles in win over Nebraska) is the Walter Camp defensive player of the week.
