Goldschmidt scores first NL run but AL again wins All-Star Game

Paul Goldschmidt got the scoring starting for the National League in Tuesday night's MLB All-Star Game, but it is the American League that will open the World Series at home for the 10th time in 13 years after a 6-3 victory at Cincinnati's Great American Ballpark.

Diamondbacks slugger Goldschmidt was 1 for 3 and scored the NL's first run, while teammate A.J. Pollock was 0 for 1.

Goldschmidt, batting cleanup, led off the second inning with an infield single to Toronto third baseman Josh Donaldson and advanced to second on Donaldson's throwing error on the play. Goldschmidt moved to third on a groundout by San Francisco's Buster Posey and the three-time All-Star scored on a bloop single by St Louis shortstop Johnny Peralta to tie the game at 1.

Goldschmidt also reached base in the sixth, when Baltimore closer Zach Britton threw wildly to first base on a grounder.

Goldschmidt is 2 for 8 in his three All-Star appearances.

Pollock, in his first All-Star Game, entered in the top of the seventh in center field. Pollock grounded out to Baltimore third baseman Manny Machado in the seventh in his only plate appearance.

"Hopefully, this is the first of more to come," Pollock told MLB.com. "The crowd was great the entire game, and it was just a great experience. I wish I could have done more with my at-bat, but we are facing filthy pitchers out there."

Angels center fielder Mike Trout became the first player in 38 years to homer leading off an All-Star Game, then became the first player to take home the Midsummer Classic's MVP award two years in row in leading the AL to the victory.
