Georgia defensive back Sanders Commings' early-morning argument Saturday with his girlfriend escalated to the point that he allegedly struck her in the face, and he was arrested several hours later, according to a report.

Commings faced simple battery and domestic violence charges, according to ESPN.com's DawgNation website.

The incident occurred in downtown Athens at 1 a.m. Saturday, police told the website.

The defensive back, who was planning to return for his senior season next year instead of aiming for the NFL draft, might not be released until Sunday, according to the report. Witnesses alerted police to the incident, ESPN reported, and were trying to break up the argument when Commings allegedly hit his girlfriend.

"After conducting interviews, it was determined that Sanders Commings and his girlfriend, who was with these people that we now were talking to, had been in an altercation of some sort -- basically where there was an argument," University of Georgia police chief Jimmy Williamson told ESPN. "The witnesses tried to intervene. At that time, he reached around one of the witnesses and struck her."

Police arrested Commings at his apartment, after obtaining a warrant from a magistrate judge at 7 a.m., Williamson told the website
