The incoming class for the Wisconsin Badgers men's hockey gained a little more notoriety on Saturday.
Two future Badgers, Jack Dougherty and Matt Berkovitz, were selected on the second day on the NHL Draft.
Dougherty, a defenseman, was picked by the Nashville Predators in the second round with the 51st overall pick. Berkovitz, a defenseman from Ashwaubenon, Wis., was a fifth-round pick of the Anaheim Ducks.
Dougherty, from Cottage Grove, Minn., spent the last year with the U.S. Team Development Program in Ann Arbor, Mich. Dougherty had five goals and 12 assists with 65 penalty minutes in 49 games last season in the United States Hockey League for the U.S. Under-18 team. He added two goals and two assists in helping Team USA to the gold medal at the Under-18 World Championships.
Taken with the 123rd overall pick, Berkovitz joins future Wisconsin teammates Nic Kerdiles and Grant Besse in the Anaheim organization. Kerdiles was a second-round pick in 2012. Besse was a fifth-round selection last year.
Berkovitz, who was born in Green Bay, was ranked by the NHL's Central Scouting Service as the 61st-best North American skater in the draft. He had 11 goals and 26 assists for Ashwaubenon High School last season. Berkovitz also played for Team Wisconsin in the Upper Midwest High School Elite Hockey League last season and had three goals and 10 assists in 21 games.
