FOX Sports South debuts three Braves DRIVEN episodes July 17
ATLANTA -- FOX Sports South, a FOX Sports regional network, will debut three special DRIVEN episodes highlighting the renowned careers of Atlanta Braves legends Bobby Cox, Tom Glavine and Greg Maddux on Thursday, July 17. Starting at 7 p.m. ET, the premiere of DRIVEN -- Greg Maddux: A Hall of Fame Career will kick-off seven straight hours of DRIVEN programming.
Maddux's illustrious rise to become one of the all-time best pitchers is chronicled in the first one-hour DRIVEN episode. The four-time Cy Young Award winner and 355-game winner discusses growing up on Air Force bases and how he and his brother, former Major League Baseball pitcher Mike Maddux, learned to play the game.
FOX Sports follows his career from a quick stint in the minor leagues to becoming the youngest player in the majors in 1986 at 20 years old to capping off his tremendous career in 2008. Nicknamed Mad Dog, Maddux also reflects on the impact of the Atlanta Braves "Big Three," which included Glavine, John Smoltz and himself.
In DRIVEN -- Tom Glavine: A Hall of Fame Career, the athletic lefty, who went on to win 305 games in his 22-year career, discusses growing up as a standout baseball and hockey player and eventually choosing to pitch over competing in the NHL. He looks back at his early struggles on the mound to winning his first Cy Young Award during the Braves 1991 "worst to first" season. Glavine went on to pitch one of the best games of his career in Game 6 of the 1995 World Series to help the Braves clinch their lone championship.
Glavine gives insight on his leaving the Braves for the New York Mets before the 2003 season and also explains his role during the 1994 baseball strike.
"This is an exciting year for me and my family and I appreciate the opportunity to share my story with all of Braves Country," Glavine said. "It's a wonderful honor to be enshrined into the National Baseball Hall of Fame, and even more special to do so alongside Bobby and Greg."
DRIVEN -- Bobby Cox: A Hall of Fame Career highlights the dugout general who led the Braves to a major professional sports record of 14 straight division titles. Cox chronicles his path from a star high school athlete to his first managerial job in the New York Yankees minor league system. The former manager also details his first "big break" as the Yankees 1st base coach during their World Series-winning 1977 season, his first stint as a Braves manager from 1978-81 and his years leading the Toronto Blue Jays from 1982-85.
Cox opens up about his decision to return to Atlanta during the 1986 season as the team's general manager and eventually returning to the dugout in the middle of the 1990 season. DRIVEN relives some of the greatest moments in Cox's tenure, including the 1991 "worst to first" season and their 1995 World Series victory.
Within each episode, viewers will gain insight into the careers of the three legends from former teammates Chipper Jones, Mark Lemke, Terry Pendleton, Eddie Perez and Smoltz. Braves president John Schuerholz, former Braves pitching coach Leo Mazzone, former broadcaster Pete Van Wieren and current FOX Sports South analyst Joe Simpson also share untold stories on the trio of Braves inductees.
Cox, Glavine and Maddux will be inducted in to the National Baseball Hall of Fame on Sunday, July 27. Here's the complete TV schedule for Thursday, July 17 on FOX Sports South:
