Former Marlin Juan Pierre, the starting center fielder on the 2003 World Series team, officially announced his retirement Friday.
Pierre, 37, spent four seasons (2003-05, 2013) with the Marlins, hitting .295 with 190 stolen bases, 80 doubles, 34 triples, seven home runs and 145 RBI in 599 games. During the six-game World Series with the New York Yankees, he batted .333 (7 for 21) with five walks, two doubles, a stolen base and three RBI.
A 13th-round pick by the Colorado Rockies in 1998, he came to the Marlins organization with Mike Hampton prior to the 2003 campaign in a trade for Charles Johnson, Preston Wilson, Pablo Ozuna and Vic Darensbourg.
His 14-year career, which culminates with a .295 average, included stops with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Chicago White Sox, Philadelphia Phillies and Chicago Cubs. He is 177th on the all-time hits list with 2,217, three more knocks than Joe DiMaggio, and 18th in stolen bases (614).
