Former Duke guard Tyler Thornton will join Steve Wojciechowski's staff at Marquette as a graduate assistant, the first-year head coach announced Monday.

Thornton, who just completed a psychology degree at Duke, will enroll in the communications graduate program at Marquette.

"I am extremely excited to have Tyler join our staff," Wojciechowski said. "He is a tireless worker and will be a tremendous asset to our program. He is a great student of the game and will obviously be able to provide perspective on what it takes to be successful at this level."

As an assistant coach at Duke, Wojciechowski coached Thornton for the past four seasons. Thornton averaged 3.1 points, 1.9 assists and 1.0 steals in 139 games for the Blue Devils. Named as Duke's team captain for the 2013-14 season, Thornton made 25 starts during his senior campaign.

Thornton joins assistant coaches Chris Carrawell, Brett Nelson and Mark Phelps, director of player personnel Travis Diener, director of basketball operations Justin Gainey and video coordinator Jake Presutti on Wojciechowski's first staff at Marquette.

"I started recruiting Tyler when he was 15 years old and have developed a close relationship with not only him, but his family as well," Wojciechowski said. "I am happy to be in a position to help Tyler begin the next phase of his life and continue his growth both personally and professionally."
