A year ago at this time, Phil Costa looked to have a realistic shot at being the Dallas Cowboys' starting center heading into the 2013 season. But things changed on the first day of the draft. The Cowboys traded back and selected Wisconsin center Travis Frederick at the tail end of the first round.
Frederick hit the ground running, starting every game and never missing a snap throughout the season, en route to earning All-Rookie Team honors from the Pro Football Writers of America.
Costa, a free agent entering the off-season, signed a two-year deal with Indianapolis last month. On Monday, the Colts announced that the 26-year-old has retired.
Costa, who started all 16 games in 2011, played in only three games each of the previous two years. A dislocated ankle caused him to miss the majority of the 2012 season. He was signed by the Cowboys as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2010.
The Cowboys waived Costa on March 7 and the Colts signed him a week later.
Costa was engaged to Hulk Hogan's daughter, Brooke Hogan, a singer and reality TV star. Brooke, however, called off the wedding in November to focus on her musical career.
