Former Badgers QB Stave signs with Vikings as undrafted free agent
Former Wisconsin Badgers quarterback Joel Stave was not selected in this year's NFL Draft, but he quickly found a home after the conclusion of the yearly player selection.
A source confirmed to FOXSportsWisconsin.com that Stave is signing as an undrafted free agent with the Minnesota Vikings.
It is a potentially good situation for Wisconsin's second all-time leading passer. The Vikings have Teddy Bridgewater as the starter and veteran Shaun Hill as the backup. The No. 3 QB is Tyler Heinicke, who is entering just his second season and, like Stave, went undrafted.
Following his senior season at Wisconsin, Stave played in the East-West Shrine Game and was invited to the NFL Combine. He visited New England and had a separate workout with the Patriots as well as Arizona. But Stave said throughout the process of the Shrine Game, combine and Pro Day, he talked with nearly every team and expected that if he wasn't drafted he'd have several teams interested in signing him.
Stave was 31-10 as a starter at Wisconsin, the school's all-time winningest quarterback, throwing for 7,635 yards and 48 touchdowns.
Based on other reports, wide receiver Alex Erickson and cornerback Darius Hillary are signing with Cincinnati, safety/wide receiver Tanner McEvoy with Seattle, offensive lineman Tyler Marz with Tennessee and tight end Austin Traylor with Dallas.
Wisconsin had two players drafted Saturday -- linebacker Joe Schobert in the fourth round to Cleveland and fullback Derek Watt to San Diego in the sixth.
FOXSportsWisconsin.com has learned safety Mike Caputo is signing with New Orleans.
