* The Chiefs finished up the 2012 campaign with a franchise-worst-tying mark of 2-14 (.125) for the second time in the last five seasons (also 2008). Kansas City went 0-12 versus AFC foes last season, with its only victories coming against New Orleans (Week 3 in OT) and Carolina (Week 13).

* Jacksonville dropped its last five contests in 2012 and ended with a franchise-worst record of 2-14 (.125). The Jaguars' only two victories last season came at Indianapolis, 22-17, in Week 3, and at home versus Tennessee, 24-19, in Week 12.

* Kansas City throttled Jacksonville, 42-20, the last time the clubs met in 2010 at Arrowhead Stadium. The Jaguars have won four of the five all-time meetings with the Chiefs that have been played at EverBank Field.

* Alex Smith will be making his Kansas City debut in Week 1 after spending his first eight NFL seasons with the 49ers. Smith is the fifth different San Francisco quarterback to eventually join and play for the Chiefs (Steve DeBerg, Joe Montana, Steve Bono and Elvis Grbac are the others).

* If his sore thumb is healthy, Blaine Gabbert will be starting for the second straight time on Kickoff Weekend for the Jaguars. Gabbert, who missed the final six games of last season with a left shoulder injury, is 5-19 in 24 career NFL starts (1-9 in 2012).

* The No. 1 (Eric Fisher) and No. 2 (Luke Joeckel) picks in the 2013 draft are expected to start today's contest for their respective squads. The last time the teams with the top two picks in that year's draft faced off against each other in Week 1 was 2007: Oakland (JaMarcus Russell) versus Detroit (Calvin Johnson).
