Equine Sean Avery wins Saratoga stakes
Sean Avery, the horse, had a decidedly better weekend than his namesake hockey player.
Sean Avery, a 5-year-old gelding, survived a furious rally by heavily favored Trappe Shot to win the $250,000 Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap by a nose Sunday at Saratoga Race Course.
Joe Bravo rode the 17-1 Sean Avery through six furlongs in 1 minute, 8.71 seconds. He returned $36.20 on a win bet.
The Allen Iwinski-trained Sean Avery won his fourth race in five starts this year, earning $150,000 for Black Swan Stable.
The hockey-playing Sean Avery was arrested in the early hours Friday and charged with suspicion of battery. Police allege the New York Rangers left wing pushed an officer who was responding to a noise complaint.
The horse was named by the controversial NHL star's friend John DeStefano, who owns Black Swan Stable.
