CHESTER-LE-STREET, England (AP) Moeen Ali was 85 not out to give England some late-order momentum as it reached 408-8 at lunch on the second day of the second test against Sri Lanka on Saturday.
Resuming on 310-6, England was moving into a commanding position in the game and the three-match series after winning the first test by an innings.
Ali and Chris Woakes (39) shared a 92-run partnership for the seventh wicket as Sri Lanka missed a couple of chances in the field in contrast to their slick display on the first day. Both Ali and Woakes were dropped.
Ali hit 10 fours to put himself in sight of a second test century.
Nuwan Pradeep was Sri Lanka's best bowler with 4-94.
