St. Louis boxer Devon Alexander dismissed opponent Lee Purdy in Atlantic City on Saturday, a fight that should have been for Alexander's IBF welterweight title, but wasn't.
Purdy, who accepted the fight late after the previously-scheduled challenger to Alexander's title (Kell Brook) withdrew with a foot injury, failed to make weight (147 pounds) before the fight. The fight still occurred, but Alexander would have kept his title if Purdy won.
The buzzkill of a voided title defense didn't seem to slow Alexander (25-1, 14 KOs). He easily dismissed Purdy, whose corner called off the fight in the seventh round. The southpaw landed a total of 176 punches compared to Purdy's 87. Alexander used mostly his right hand after injuring his left during the fight.
Alexander's next opponent is unknown at this time. Potential options include Amir Khan and, while it might be a reach, Floyd Mayweather Jr.
"If Amir wants it, he can have it," Alexander told ESPN. "If Floyd [Mayweather Jr.] wants it, he can have it. I want to fight the best."
