Dazed cyclist needs help getting back on bike after scary crash, tries to finish race
A Latvian cyclist suffered a brutal crash during a recent event in California and attempted to finish the race despite clear signs that he should have called it a day.
Toms Skujins wiped out hard during stage two of the Tour of California on Monday, suffering a broken collarbone and concussion in the process. Despite his injuries, Skujins appeared determined to get back on the bike.
In his concussed state, the dazed cyclist stumbled all over the road and nearly walked straight into oncoming racers. Somehow, organizers allowed him to get back on the bike and continue for a time. Skujins nearly rode straight into a few curbs before he was ultimately pulled out of the race.
Not surprisingly, many people were concerned it took so long.
“Our internal concussion program is designed to slow things down and give the rider time to recover properly,” said team CEO Jonathan Vaughters, via the Telegraph. “Concussion recovery varies from person to person and from day to day. We’ll evaluate Toms daily and he’ll need to pass a cognitive test before he returns to hard training or racing. His health is the most important thing to all of us.”
I'm not a doctor, but that appeared to be one of the most obvious concussions ever. Letting him get back on that bike always seemed like a really, really bad idea.
