ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Tampa Bay Rays left-hander David Price left a game against the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday night at Tropicana Field after 2 1/3 innings with left triceps tightness.
Price was charged with four earned runs and five hits on 57 pitches. He began the top of the third inning by walking Stephen Drew and allowing a single to center field to Jacoby Ellsbury. Shane Victorino was retired on a fly out to left fielder Sean Rodriguez. Then Dustin Pedroia singled to right field, scoring Drew, and David Ortiz singled to shallow left to score Ellsbury off a 95-mph fastball.
Shortly after, with Boston leading 2-0, head Rays athletic trainer Ron Porterfield, pitching coach Jim Hickey and manager Joe Maddon visited the mound. After a brief delay, Price walked toward the dugout alongside Porterfield. Right-hander Jamey Wright came in as relief.
Price, the reigning American League Cy Young Award winner, entered the game with a 1-3 record and a 4.78 ERA. Tampa Bay had lost six of his first eight starts.
