Starters right fielder Gerardo Parra and center fielder A.J. Pollock return, as does Cody Ross, who is recovering from his fractured hip. Also back are Alfredo Marte and Tony Campana, who both spent time with the D-backs last season in reserve roles.
Big hitter Mark Trumbo was acquired in a trade with the Los Angeles Angels to play left field. Matt Tuiasosopo was claimed off waivers from Detroit on Nov. 1.
Ross has spent the offseason rehabbing a fractured and dislocated left hip that he suffered while attempting to beat a play at first base against the New York Mets on Aug. 4. General manager Kevin Towers said Tuesday that Ross is taking batting practice at the D-backs' facility and could be ready by the start of the season.
Trumbo is not a veteran in the outfield by any means, but he did start 73 games in left field and 49 in right during his three seasons with the Los Angeles Angels, where he was mainly used at first base but also played some DH and a dash of third base. The D-backs have no doubts that he will be a diligent worker, and Trumbo said at the time of the deal that having one spot to call home should help. ... Pollock enters camp as the No. 1 center fielder after making the most of his chance in 2013. He came to camp last year as the fifth outfielder in line for four spots but broke camp with the team after injuries to Adam Eaton and Ross. Pollock is the D-backs' best defensive center fielder and was among the 2013 rookie leaders in stolen bases (first, 12), doubles (second, 28) and runs (second, 64) while batting .269. ... The D-backs will use the spring to identify a fourth outfielder in the event that Ross is not ready by the start of the regular season. Marte, Campana and Tuiasosopo would seem to be the candidates. At the same time, given third baseman Martin Prado's ability to play the outfield, the D-backs could consider keeping first baseman/left fielder Shelly Duncan, who is in camp on a minor-league contract. Duncan and Campana hit left-handed but bring different games, Duncan with power and Campana with speed. Marte and Tuiasosopo hit right-handed.
Trumbo has increased his power production every year since he entered the majors in 2011 -- 29, 32 and 34 home runs; 87, 95 and 100 RBI. ... Eaton, who was expected to be the starting center field and leadoff hitter before suffering an elbow injury last spring training, was sent to the Chicago White Sox as part of the three-team deal that landed Trumbo from the Angels. The D-backs also included left-hander Tyler Skaggs in the package. ... Parra (.268, 79 runs, 57 extra-base hits) set career records in almost every offensive category and led the National League with 17 assists while winning a Gold Glove for the second time in his first season as the regular right fielder. Parra won the Gold Glove in left field in 2011. ... Tuiasosopo has athletic bloodlines. His father, Manu, was a defensive lineman at UCLA and the NFL Seattle Seahawks, and his brother, Marques, was a quarterback at the University of Washington and Oakland and the New York Jets in the NFL.
