The Diamondbacks released catcher Rod Barajas on Monday, making Wil Nieves the backup to starter Miguel Montero.
Barajas, a member of Arizona's 2001 World Series championship team, was a nonroster invitee in Diamondbacks camp this spring. He hit .290 with two homers and five RBI in 31 Cactus League at-bats.
The 37-year-old Barajas has a career .235 average with 136 home runs and 480 RBIs.
With the backup catcher competition over, the Diamondbacks' only remaining question in camp appears to be at the back of the rotation, where left-hander Patrick Corbin and right-hander Randall Delgado, both 23, are competing to be the fifth starter.
