The Diamondbacks called up pitcher Zeke Spruill from Triple-A Reno on Monday and designed infielder Josh Wilson for assignment to make room on the roster.
The team said Spruill was needed to provide bullpen depth because Josh Collmenter, who's been reliable in a long-relief role, threw six innings on Tuesday and would need some rest. Collmenter's long outing was due to starter Trevor Cahill leaving early after being hit in the hip area by a line drive.
The 23-year-old Spruill was acquired by the Braves as part of the Justin Upton trade before the season. In minor league stops this year at Reno and Double-A Mobile, Spruill has gone 3-6 with a 3.12 ERA in 14 starts. He had thrown 17 straight scoreless innings over his last two starts before the call-up.
In six minor league seasons, Spruill has gone 41-39 with a 3.52 ERA and nine complete games in 118 appearances, all but nine of them starts.
Wilson had played sparingly in a middle-infield role, appearing in 30 games and hitting .200 with a homer and four RBIs. This was his third stint with the D-backs; he also spent parts of the 2009 and '11 seasons in Arizona. The Diamondbacks' need for a utility infielder lessened with the return from injury of Willie Bloomquist, who has since taken much of the playing time at second base. Aaron Hill also is nearing a return from a broken hand.
