DURHAM, N.C. -- The NCAA has denied Duke's appeal for immediate eligibility for transfer Jeremy Cash.
Duke coach David Cutcliffe made the announcement Tuesday night after the Blue Devils' final scrimmage of the preseason.
Cash is a safety who played five games as a freshman at Ohio State last season but transferred to Duke in January after Urban Meyer was hired as coach of the Buckeyes.
NCAA rules require football players who transfer to sit out one season before they are eligible to play in games, unless they receive a waiver. After Duke's request for a waiver was denied earlier this month by the NCAA, the Blue Devils appealed.
Cash will be allowed to practice this season but can't play in games until 2013.
