KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Outfielder Allen Craig could begin taking at-bats in minor league games as early as today, manager Mike Matheny said this morning.

Craig, who began taking batting practice on the field Thursday, won’t run the bases or play in the field. He’ll likely lead off each inning to get his necessary at-bats in.

“Possibly today, getting some live at-bats in minor league camp,” Matheny said. “He’s close to getting those now. It’s probably one of those situations where he wouldn’t be running the bases but he would take the at-bats and wouldn’t be in the field, but certainly that’s something to be excited about, him taking another step forward.”

Craig has not been cleared for side-to-side running and has done only straight-line sprints in the outfield. He’s likely still at least a week or two from being cleared for all baseball activities.
