Coyotes re-sign Summers to two-year contract

The Coyotes on Monday re-signed defenseman Chris Summers to a two-year contract. As per club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Summers was set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

The 26-year-old Summers became a regular on the Coyotes' blue line for the first time late in this past season, recording two goals and an assist while playing the final 18 regular-season games. He also registered two goals and seven assists in 48 games with Phoenix's AHL affiliate in Portland prior to his call-up. In his career, the 2006 first-round pick has two goals and four assists in 47 NHL games.

With veteran defenseman Derek Morris not expected back as an unrestricted free agent, Summers likely will have a spot in the Coyotes' second or third defensive pairing, depending on the team's additional moves before next season.
