Cowboys swap fullbacks by re-signing Tyler Clutts, releasing Jed Collins

The Cowboys brought a familiar face back into the mix on Monday, as they re-signed fullback Tyler Clutts.

The team swapped one fullback for another, as they released Jed Collins after just two months on the roster. Clutts signed in with the Cowboys near the end of the 2013 season, and he was the team's lone fullback for the duration of 2014, catching his first NFL touchdown during the Jan. 11 playoff loss to Green Bay.

Clutts' contract expired after the 2014 season, and the Cowboys seemed to opt in another direction back in March, as they signed free agents Collins and Ray Agnew to compete for the fullback spot. Collins spent last season with Detroit after he amassed eight total touchdowns in three seasons with the New Orleans Saints. Agnew signed with the Cleveland Browns as an undrafted free agent last spring and appeared in 12 games.

With Clutts back on the roster, it seems fair to consider him the favorite to win back his old job, though Agnew did start nine games as a rookie.

Either way, the offensive backfield should make for some entertaining viewing at training camp. The Cowboys carried three running backs and one fullback on their active roster last season, while they used four running backs with no fullback for the majority of 2013.

Heading into Organized Team Activities next week, they have two fullbacks to go along with four running backs – Darren McFadden, Joseph Randle, Lance Dunbar and Ryan Williams. That's six candidates for what will likely amount to four roster spots, which will be determined at training camp in Oxnard, Calif.
