RAJKOT, India (AP) Alastair Cook and Haseeb Hameed notched the highest opening stand by an English pair ever in India on Sunday, scoring 180 runs to lead the visitors to 211-2 at lunch on day five of the teams' first test.

Cook and Hameed surpassed the previous high of 178 runs set by Graeme Fowler and Tim Robinson in Chennai in 1985 to help the visitors open up a 260-run lead in their second innings.

Cook (106 not out) reached his 30th test century off 194 balls and became the first English batsman to score five hundreds in India.

The 19-year-old Hameed also set an individual mark, scoring the highest total for an English teenager in test cricket with his 82. The previous record was 74 runs by Jack Crawford against South Africa in 1906.

Hameed was caught out and bowled off Amit Mishra (2-38) in the 59th over.

England then lost Joe Root (4) quickly before Ben Stokes (6 not out) came in to help accelerate the scoring and prevent the tourists from having to settle for a draw.

England added 97 runs in the morning session after resuming at 114-0.
