The motto of the 2012 Tigers might just be bigger is better.
They have added a larger-than-life slugger, Prince Fielder, by giving him a larger-than-life contract, and now the team has officially announced their plans for a new scoreboard, which is scheduled to be fully operational by Opening Day.
“Every year there are discussions with ownership to assess how to upgrade the ballpark and enhance the fan experience,” said Duane McLean,Tigers Executive Vice President, Business Operations in a press release. “The goal is to provide the best in-park atmosphere possible for the fans. The new HD video board and system integration is a significant upgrade to Comerica Park.”
At 48 feet high and 127 feet wide, the new video display will be the biggest video board in Michigan, and one of the largest in baseball.
It will feature the well-renowned LED technology to provide crystal-clear HD images to the fans, and has been raised 16 feet to improve sight lines.
There is also a new 5' x 100' LED display being installed below the main display that will be used primarily for pitching statistics.
The equipment will be provided, designed and installed by Daktronics Inc., an electronics company that has integrated "super systems" (which is what the Tigers are having installed) in 22 of 30 ballparks, and display equipment in 26 of 30.
The Tigers report to spring training next week, with pitchers and catchers arriving on Sunday. They open the season in Detroit vs. the Boston Red Sox on April 5.
