Cincinnati defeats Savannah State 54-41

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Yancy Gates scored 12 points and Cashmere Wright added 11 points to lead Cincinnati to a 54-41 victory over Savannah State on Wednesday night.

Gates grabbed nine rebounds for the Bearcats (4-0), who won despite shooting 34 percent from the field (18 of 53).

Cincinnati led 29-19 at halftime and scored the first six points of the second half for a 35-19 advantage with 17:04 remaining.

Rashad Bishop's 3-pointer gave the Bearcats a 41-24 lead with 12:59 to play. They extended it to 48-28 on Gates' jumper with 4:23 left.

Ibrahima Thomas added eight rebounds for Cincinnati.

This was the fourth of six consecutive home games to open the season for the Bearcats.

The Tigers (1-6), who have lost six consecutive games, were 16 of 42 from the field (38.1 percent).

Jovonni Shuler led the Tigers, who committed 18 turnovers, with 14 points.
