CCL Roundup: Montréal holds off New York, Club América thumps Bayamon
Montréal 1 -- New York 0
Marco Di Vaio handed Montréal the inside track in Group 3 with his early winner at Stade Saputo. Di Vaio chested down an inviting diagonal from Ignacio Piatti and slid home after 16 minutes. New York pressed forward with its reserve-laden side even after the second-half dismissal of Connor Lade for a second booking, but the Red Bulls could not procure an equalizer. The result leaves the Impact atop the group with nine points and the Red Bulls in need of two victories to keep their quarterfinal dreams alive.
Bayamon 1 -- Club América 10
América climbed to the top of Group 8 on goal difference with an emphatic win in Puerto Rico. Luis Gabriel Rey and Martin Zuniga both registered hat tricks in the romp, while Hosman Ramos produced Bayamon's first goal in the competition shortly after halftime to provide a meager slice of solace. The heavy victory means América will advance to the quarterfinals with a home draw against Comunicaciones on Oct. 21.
Municipal 3 -- Real Espana 0
Marvin Avila bagged a hat trick to move the Guatemalan side into second place in Group 1. Avila opened the scoring 10 minutes before the break and then secured the points with a second-half double. The result pushes Municipal into second place with four points, but the Guatemalans must win at Pachuca (6 pts.) next Wednesday in order to keep their slim hopes of a quarterfinal berth alive.
