After putting together one of the finest defensive seasons in recent history, Milwaukee Brewers center fielder Carlos Gomez was named a finalist for the Gold Glove award Friday.
Denard Span of the Nationals and Andrew McCutchen of the Pirates join Gomez as the finalists for the award among National League center fielders. Gold Glove winners will be announced Tuesday evening on ESPN2.
The numbers certainly support Gomez's candidacy, as the 27-year-old led all center fielders with 38 defensive runs saved, the most by a center fielder since the statistic began being tracked 11 years ago. His five home-run robbing catches were the most in a single season since that statistic started being kept 10 years ago.
Gomez finished with a career-high 12 assists, only trailing Juan Lagares of the Mets among center fielders. He committed five errors in 145 games in center field but played his final 32 games without an error.
Milwaukee has had four different players win nine Gold Glove awards in franchise history, but the last member of the Brewers to win the award was Robin Yount at shortstop in 1982. The 30-season drought without a Gold Glove winner is the longest active streak in baseball.
