Cards seeking another interview with McCoy
The Cardinals will try to bring Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy in for a second interview on Tuesday, as first reported by Jay Glazer of FOX Sports. The opportunity for the interview was made possible when Denver, the AFC’s top playoff seed, lost at home to Baltimore on Saturday.
Cards defensive coordinator Ray Horton is the only other known candidate who has had two interviews. The Cardinals had Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden in for an interview last week and may have interviewed Steelers OC and former Cards OC Todd Haley last week, although there were conflicting reports on that front.
McCoy’s second interview would open the possibility that the hiring process could move very fast, perhaps coming to a resolution within the next couple of days. There are no other known candidates, and with the possible exception of Haley, the Cards have been relatively transparent in this hiring process.
If McCoy is the Cards’ man, they may have some competition for his services. He has already interviewed with the Eagles, Bears and Chargers, with some reports Tuesday indicating that he was already in negotiations on a contract to take over in San Diego. There was also a report that the Jaguars had interest.
If the Cardinals lose out, they could still turn to Horton, or Horton could be their No. 1 choice anyway. Either way, with new general manager Steve Keim also in place, the Cards should be able to turn their attention toward personnel issues -- the draft, free agents, evaluation of their own players, etc. -- very soon.
