Cards change pitching plans

JUPITER, Fla. - While the Cardinals wait for an update on ace Chris Carpenter's sore neck, the club has adjusted their rotation for the upcoming week.

Jaime Garcia and Adam Wainwright will both move up a day and start on three days rest for their second spring starts. Garcia will go Monday in Jupiter against the Braves while Wainwright will start Tuesday in Port St. Lucie against the Mets.

"It's just the way it worked out," said manager Mike Matheny. "It made sense to get Jaime, he only threw about 20 pitches, so instead of doing as much with the side work, we can start working towards how this thing is going to lay out. We can get those other pieces put together and we can figure out who is going to be where once we start the season.

"You guys understand the reverse engineering that goes into it there, so its making sure that we have everybody once we get to that spot."
Carpenter was tentatively scheduled to start one of Monday's split-squad games before persistent neck pain put that on hold. The right-hander was evaluated Friday in Jupiter and the results are being reviewed by specialists in St. Louis.

The Cardinals hope to have an update on Carpenter at some point this weekend.

Shelby Miller will make a second spring start Monday in the other split-squad game against the Nationals in Viera.

Asked about altering the plan further because of a possible absence by Carpenter, Matheny said, "There's 40 different plans because you never know which guy may have something come up, but to put those plans into motion now, we don't have enough information so it doesn't make any sense."
