Cardinals place Holliday on DL with right quadriceps strain
ST. LOUIS -- The St. Louis Cardinals' sputtering offense will have to get back on track wihout the services of slugger Matt Holliday.
The Cardinals announced Thursday that they have placed the All-Star outfielder on the 15-day DL with a right quadriceps strain. Infielder Greg Garcia was recalled from Triple A Memphis to take his spot on the roster. Additionally, the team also announced that it has designated first baseman Dan Johnson for assignment in order to add newly-acquired outfielder/first baseman Brandon Moss to both the 25-man and 40-man rosters.
Holliday is going on the disabled list for the second time this season, missing 31 games from June 9 to July 16 with the same injury.
Garcia will be making his second appearance this season with the big club, having played in 12 games with St. Louis from June 19 to July 3, batting .417 (5 for 12) with a game-tying pinch-homer June 26 vs. the Chicago Cubs.
The left-handed hitting Garcia was batting .299 with 33 RBI and a .404 on-base pct. in his 81 games at Memphis this season. He was batting .332 (65 for 196) vs. right-handed pitchers and .354 (23 for 65) with 32 RBI when batting with runners in scoring position.
Garcia, a college teammate of Kolten Wong at the University of Hawaii, wears uniform No. 35.
