Cameron Marshall: I'll be back
Jan. 6, 2012
ASU needed some good news. Cameron Marshall delivered.
“I am definitely still coming back for my senior season,” the Sun Devils junior running back said Friday.
The news comes in the wake of quarterback Brock Osweiler’s decision on Friday to declare for the NFL Draft. Marshall was also considered a potential NFL Draft prospect.
“I’d be lying to you if I said we weren’t going to miss Brock,” Marshall said. “I didn’t see that one coming, but we’ve got some guys behind him who have been in the program so I think we’ll be able to be successful.”
Marshall would play a big role in that success. He rushed for 1,098 yards and tied a school single-season record with 18 rushing touchdowns in 2011.
He battled an ankle injury much of the season and had to shoulder a heavier workload with backfield mate Deantre Lewis sidelined all season after being shot while home for the winter break.
Marshall produced some of the year’s most memorable plays, including a 70-yard TD run against USC and a 37-yard TD run against Oregon State on which he broke five tackles. If Lewis is healthy next season, the Devils backfield could help take some of the pressure off young quarterbacks Mike Bercovici and Michael Eubank.
“I think we’ll be all right,” Marshall said.
