MESA, Ariz. -- Starlin Castro returned from a hamstring injury that had sidelined him since Feb. 27, getting a single and a walked Wednesday in the Chicago Cubs' 2-0 loss to the Colorado Rockies.
Castro, who hurt his left leg in a game against the Los Angeles Dodgers, walked against Jorge De La Rosa leading off the first, singled in the third and came out after the inning.
Playing his usual shortstop position, Castro just missed throwing out leadoff batter Eric Young on a grounder leading off the game. Josh Rutledge followed with a grounder to second baseman Darwin Barney, who threw to second, and Castro's throw to first just missed getting a double play. Troy Tulowitzki followed with an RBI double.
Castro had three assists in the second, when Jordan Pacheco, Nolan Arenado and Ramon Hernandez all grounded to shortstop.
Cubs starter Edwin Jackson gave up one run and three hits in five innings, retiring eight in a row. De La Rosa escaped bases-loaded in the first and third innings, and allowed four hits in four innings with six strikeouts.
Tulowitzki had a sixth-inning sacrifice fly against Kyuji Fujikawa.
PADRES 8, ANGELS 6
PEORIA, Ariz. -- Mike Trout had a
double and a triple and Peter Bourjos homered as the star-studded Los
Angeles Angels knocked the San Diego Padres around early but blew a lead
late in an 8-6 loss Wednesday.
Bourjos' two-run homer in the
fourth inning off Clayton Richard put the Angels ahead 5-2. Richard
allowed five runs and nine hits in five innings.
Los Angeles starter Joe Blanton allowed two runs on five hits in five innings.
Albert
Pujols was the Angels' designated hitter and went 1 for 3 with an RBI.
Right fielder Josh Hamilton also had a hit and drove in a run.
The Padres took the lead in the eighth inning on a two-run error by Matt Young.
INDIANS 5, WHITE SOX 2
GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Ubaldo Jimenez pitched five solid innings, settling into a good groove after allowing two runs in the second, and Cord Phelps hit his second homer of spring training to lift the Cleveland Indians to a 5-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday.
After stringing together four hits in the second, including an RBI ground-rule double to center by Gordon Beckham and a run-scoring single by Dewayne Wise, the White Sox were held to two hits in the final six innings against Jimenez and four Indians relievers.
Lonnie Chisenhall and Asdrubal Cabrera each doubled for the Indians, giving Cleveland a major league-leading 46 doubles this spring.
Alexei Ramirez (.409) singled twice and stole a base, and Wise had two singles for the White Sox.
ROYALS 4, MARINERS 2
SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Ervin Santana struck out seven in four innings, Billy Butler and Salvador Perez hit run-singles and the Kansas City Royals beat the Seattle Mariners 4-2 Wednesday to improve their spring training record to 14-2.
Santana, acquired from the Los Angeles Angels during the offseason, allowed his only run on Carlos Truinfel's third-inning homer. Santana gave up two hits and threw 35 of 53 pitches for strikeouts.
Hisashi Iwakuma retired the first nine Royals, eight on groundouts, before allowing four singles in the fourth -- including the hits by Butler and Perez.
Elliot Johnson tripled leading off the sixth and scored on Xavier Nady's single for a 3-2 lead.
Seattle has lost four straight and six of seven following a 10-game winning streak.
GIANTS 9, REDS 5
GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Barry Zito allowed a run while pitching 3 1-3 innings and Bronson Arroyo gave up one earned run in four in the San Francisco Giants' 9-5 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday.
Zito gave up five hits and struck out three for the Giants in an outing against the team the World Series champions rallied from a 2-0 deficit to beat in a best-of-five NL playoff series.
Reds left-hander Arroyo's throwing error on a bunt by former teammate Wilson Valdez allowed a run to score. Arroyo yielded four hits.
Andres Torres left in the top of the third after being thrown out trying to stretch a double into a triple. Torres had flu-like symptoms.
Chris Heisey homered off Javier Lopez to tie the game at 3. It was his first of the spring.
