Bucs send CB Eric Wright to 49ers for 2014 draft pick

TAMPA, Fla. — Cornerback Eric Wright is headed to San Francisco.
Wright, signed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a free agent in March 2012, was traded to the 49ers for a conditional pick in the 2014 NFL draft, the team announced Friday.

Wright, 27, played 10 games for Tampa Bay last season and recorded 37 tackles with one interception. He was part of a decorated free-agency class that included wide receiver Vincent Jackson and guard Carl Nicks, but Wright was suspended four games last November for violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing substances.
He restructured his contract in the offseason and figured to be in Tampa Bay's plans for a revamped secondary that included the additions of cornerback Darrelle Revis and safety Dashon Goldson.
However, another off-the-field problem appeared to end Wright’s troubled time with Tampa Bay. He was arrested July 12 on a misdemeanor DUI charge, as first reported by the Tampa Bay Times. According to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department records, Wright was arrested at 5:15 p.m. and released on $5,000 bail at 12:17 a.m. on July 13. A court date in the Los Angeles area is set for Aug. 7.
Wright, who signed a five-year, $37.5 million contract with the Bucs in March 2012, was arrested on suspicion of felony DUI in July 2012, a charge that was later dismissed.
"We are pleased to add Eric to our team," San Francisco general manager Trent Baalke said in a statement Friday. "As an organization, we have done our due diligence and anticipate Eric working hard to contribute to the 49ers."
Wright, drafted in the second round, 53rd overall, by the Cleveland Browns in the 2007 draft, played four seasons with the Browns before joining the Detroit Lions for the 2011 campaign. He has 81 career starts and 14 interceptions, with a career-high four in both the 2009 and 2011 seasons.
