Detroit Lions star receiver Calvin Johnson was held out of the preseason game Thursday night at Cleveland because of a bruised knee.

The injury is not believed to be serious. The decision to sit Johnson was for precautionary reasons.

Patrick Edwards, an undrafted player last year out of the University of Houston, was expected to start in Johnson’s place.

EXTRA POINT

Bill Ford Jr., the Lions’ vice chairman, has been appointed to the NFL’s Broadcasting Committee.

The committee, which negotiates TV contracts, is composed of many of the league’s most influential owners.
