BEREA, Ohio -- The Browns agreed to terms with quarterback Alex Tanney, who was previously on the Cowboys practice squad. Tanney tweeted earlier in the day that "(A) New chapter starts in Cleveland".
Pro Football Talk reported Monday afternoon that quarterback Caleb Hanie was going to be brought in for a tryout. Rob Chudzinski said Monday that it was likely the Browns would add a quarterback before Sunday's game with the Jaguars with the uncertainty of Jason Campbell's status due to the NFL's concussion protocol.
Tanney (6-3, 223) was an undrafted free agent rookie from Division III Monmouth College (Illinois), who signed with the Chiefs in 2012. He made a YouTube video that went viral two years ago that showed him making trick passes and it landed him a shot with the Chiefs in training camp in 2012. He spent the season on injured reserve with a finger injury and was released in May.
The Cowboys signed him and spent the preseason in Dallas before being signed to the practice squad after the final roster cuts were made. Tanney was 40-of-73 for 423 yards with the Cowboys during the 2013 preseason with one touchdown and two interceptions. Tanney was with the Cowboys for the first 12 weeks of the 2013 season.
At Monmouth, Tanney set NCAA Division III career records with 14,249 passing yards and 157 touchdowns in 47 games. He was the Midwest Conference Offensive Player of the Year three times from Lexington, Illinois.
