BEREA—In a nifty marketing move to showcase his athleticism, USC tight end Jordan Cameron teamed up with Clippers star Blake Griffin to display his catching and leaping ability.
You never know, as it might have helped catch the Browns’ eyes.
Cameron made a video seen on YouTube with Griffin where Griffin threw a football to him near the basket and Cameron dunked it. Cameron thinks his basketball skills will help in football.
“I think the sport really transitions well to football,” he said. “There are a lot of areas that going up and getting the ball comes in to play the same in basketball and football.”
After starting defensively, Pat Shurmur is starting to add some weapons for the offense and Colt McCoy.
Adding wide receiver Greg Little with their second pick in the second round, the Browns used their first pick in the fourth round to take Cameron.
Cameron (6-5, 250) started his college career as a basketball player at Brigham Young, but transferred to USC in 2008 to play football for the Trojans after playing a season at Ventura College.
At Ventura, he played wide receiver his first season and caught 22 passes for 340 yards (15.45 avg.) with four touchdowns. He then transferred to USC where he played wide receiver before moving to tight end for his final year.
Cameron caught 16 passes for 126 yards and a touchdown in 2010, but produced first downs on eight of his receptions. Despite finishing second in receptions on his own team at the tight end position, Cameron thinks his potential is just beginning to be tapped.
“I feel I’m a tip of the iceberg kind of guy and know I have a lot to learn,” he said. “I think (the Browns) are a good judge of talent and can see what I can do.
“I’ll be a good football player for (the Browns),” Cameron said. “I’m pretty athletic and am willing to learn.
On the surface, Cameron looks to be a similar type of play to current Browns receiver Evan Moore.
“I can create some mismatches and am willing to learn from the coaches and stretch the field.”
Cameron comes from an athletic family as his brother is currently a quarterback at Louisiana Tech and his sister, Brynn, was a guard on the USC women’s basketball team from 2005-09.
