Bright Thought set a world record of 2 minutes, 22.72 seconds for a 1 1/2-mile turf race at Santa Anita.
The 4-year-old Kentucky-bred won the $150,000 San Luis Rey Stakes by 3 1/4 lengths on Saturday in a time that was originally announced as a stakes and track record. The delay in recognizing it as a world record was because the first three-eighths of a mile in the race were run downhill.
A review of previous record holders at the distance led to confirmation of it as a world mark on Sunday by the American Racing Manuel, the official record keeper for U.S. racing.
It bettered the old mark of 2:22.80, set by Hawkster on Oct. 14, 1989.
Bright Thought is trained by Jorge Gutierrez and was ridden by Victor Espinoza.
