Brewers place Thames on 10-day DL with thumb injury
Fresh off their seventh straight win, the Milwaukee Brewers could be without one of their top sluggers for a while.
First baseman Eric Thames has been placed on the 10-day disabled list with a torn ligament in this left thumb, the Brewers announced Wednesday. The injury -- sometimes known as "skier's thumb" -- can require up to six weeks of recovery time, per the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Surgery is a possibility, but Thames plans to undergo more tests before making a decision.
Thames suffered the injury Tuesday during the Brewers' 5-2 win over the Kansas City Royals. Now in his second season with the Brewers, the 31-year-old struggled out the gate but has been sharp in recent weeks, and is slashing .250/.351/.625 this season with seven home runs and 13 RBI.
The Brewers recalled right-handed pitcher Brandon Woodruff from Triple-A Colorado Springs to fill the open roster spot. Woodruff has made two relief appearances and one start for Milwaukee this season, allowing 10 hits and four earned runs with six strikeouts and two walks in seven innings.
