Brett Favre thinks he can still play -- but does anyone still care?

We're in the middle of NFL hibernation. It's June, and it's that time between minicamps and training camps, when the NFL world is usually resting.

So, of course that makes it the perfect time for attention-seekers to grab the spotlight, and one of the most famous NFL divas reared his head this week.

Yes, it's been too long since we've heard from Brett Favre, the man whose 522 career touchdown passes only rival the amount of times it feels like he's unretired.

Favre, who will be on the cover of SI this week, was asked if he could still play. Here is his response:

"I think I could play," Favre said. "As far as throwing. Of course, we're not trying to start some he's-coming-out-of-retirement deal."

"Do I think I could play and lead a team? Look, no. But I could play. I could make all the throws I made before, I just couldn't throw it near as far, but that never matters anyway."

The last part of the quote -- "it never matters anyway" --€“ should be applied to anything Favre still says about a possible return. He's 45, been out of the league for four years, and even though he will be brought back to Green Bay and honored this season, alienated the Packers' fan base at the end of his run there by calling it quits and returning.

He forced a trade to the Jets in the 2008 offseason once the Packers had decided to stick with Aaron Rodgers -- who won a Super Bowl in 2010, coincidentally Favre's final season --€“ and then played two more seasons for the hated Vikings.

Then there was the reported footsie Favre played with the Rams in 2013, as well, about returning.

We wish Favre well in his retirement, and his eventual coronation at Lambeau later this season, but we do hope he lets us just sleep through the rest of this break between now and training camps. We would much rather hear about jeans or razors than anything he still wants to do with a football.
