Breaking down Packers' unofficial depth chart
GREEN BAY, Wis. — It states right at the top of the document that it's unofficial, but the Packers released their first depth chart of training camp.
Looking at the list, there are several rankings that seem to contradict the order of how players have been used so far during practice sessions. There are also several areas that require a bit more explanation and analysis.
Here are 10 of the most-pressing answers in regard to the Packers' first unofficial depth chart of the season:
1. Charles Woodson is listed as Green Bay's starting strong safety, but that is with the assumption of the Packers playing in their 3-4 defensive packages. Last season, defensive coordinator Dom Capers used nickel packages much more frequently than the team's base 3-4 defense, and it appears that nickel will be even more common this year. When in nickel, Woodson has been moving to slot cornerback and M.D. Jennings, who is listed as Woodson's backup, becomes a starter.
2. Jarrett Bush began training camp as the starting outside cornerback opposite Tramon Williams, and that is how it appears on this depth chart. However, Davon House, who is listed as the third-string cornerback in the team's ranking, has emerged and has been getting a lot of the starting snaps over Bush in recent days.
3. Jerel Worthy is not listed as a starter, but again, that is because the depth chart is assuming the Packers' 3-4 base defense. Worthy teams up with B.J. Raji as the starting defensive linemen in the nickel packages, at least according to nearly every snap so far in training camp. In the base defense, however, the starters are named as Raji, Ryan Pickett and C.J. Wilson, which accurately lines up with how they've been used in practices.
4. Dezman Moses has been playing a lot of snaps with the first-team defense, even during the Packers' family night scrimmage once Clay Matthews exited the game for rest. In this depth chart, however, he is a third-stringer behind Vic So'oto. Realistically, Moses should be listed with the second-team defense and appears on his way to making the Packers' active roster this season.
5. Brandon Saine is listed before Alex Green as the top backup to starting running back James Starks. With Green still on somewhat limited snaps in practice after spending all offseason rehabilitating from a torn ACL, this depth chart order is likely just a safety precaution to ease expectations on Green. Saine has looked good in training camp, but Green will certainly be featured more than him once completely healthy.
6. Jordy Nelson is finally a starter, officially. Though he was top-10 in the NFL last season in receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns, Nelson was technically a backup behind Donald Driver. Not anymore, as Nelson is now listed in front of Driver.
7. Sampson Genus is listed as the backup center, but if Jeff Saturday suffers an injury, it would be Evan Dietrich-Smith who would slide into the starting center role. No player is listed twice on the depth chart, so with Dietrich-Smith behind T.J. Lang at left guard, he can't also be named behind Saturday.
8. Randall Cobb is on the third-string offense on the depth chart but has been seeing significant snaps with Aaron Rodgers during training camp and should figure as a prominent part of the offense this season.
9. Tom Crabtree is listed as the No. 2 tight end behind starter Jermichael Finley. Though Crabtree has been getting a lot of action with Rodgers, second-year players D.J. Williams and Ryan Taylor have certainly gotten more snaps than their third-string depth-chart status would indicate.
10. Derek Sherrod is behind Marshall Newhouse on the depth chart at left tackle, but injuries have clouded that situation. Sherrod is not cleared yet to return to practice, which has meant Herb Taylor -- listed as the No. 2 right tackle on this chart -- has slid to left tackle with the second-string group. Rookie Andrew Datko -- listed as the No. 3 left tackle -- has been working as the second-team right tackle behind Bryan Bulaga.
