Bonner named WNBA Player of the Week
Mercury forward DeWanna Bonner was named the Western Conference Player of the Week, the WNBA announced Monday.
The award comes after the 6-foot-4 forward averaged 20.7 points and 10.7 rebounds in the Mercury's three games in four nights last week, leading all Western Conference players in scoring and finishing second in rebounding. Bonner recorded 22 points and 10 rebounds Thursday in Atlanta and 23 points and 13 rebounds at home Sunday against Tulsa. Those were the sixth and seventh 20-10 performances of Bonner's career, leaving her one shy of the franchise record held by Jennifer Gillom.
Bonner narrowly missed making it three straight double-doubles Friday, posting 17 points and nine rebounds in San Antonio on the second night of a back-to-back.
Named a full-time starter this season to replace Penny Taylor, who is out for the year with a torn left ACL, the three-time WNBA Sixth Woman of the Year is averaging 18.7 points and 8.0 rebounds through six games. She has scored 20-plus points three times this season after doing so only five times in all of 2011.
