Blue Jackets announce new shoulder patch during draft party
COLUMBUS, OHIO -- The 1857 Napoleon cannon that has become an iconic part of the Columbus Blue Jackets experience since its introduction in 2010 will be part of the club's primary home and road jerseys in the form of a shoulder patch beginning with the upcoming 2015-16 National Hockey League season. The club unveiled the new look tonight at its annual draft party at Nationwide Arena.
"When the cannon logo was introduced on our third jerseys five years ago, it was extremely well-received and has become very popular with our fans," said Blue Jackets Vice President of Marketing J.D. Kershaw. "The cannon is synonymous with the Blue Jackets, scoring goals and winning games, so it was appropriate to incorporate that in our primary home and road jerseys."
The shoulder patch logo is similar to the club's current third jersey logo as the team name "Columbus Blue Jackets" encircles the cannon in a ribbon inspired by Civil War medals while a single star centered at the bottom of the crest signifies Columbus as Ohio's capital. The difference is the logo is comprised of the club's primary colors -- Union Blue, Goal Red, Capital Silver and White.
The new shoulder patch replaces the mark containing a blue Union Army cap, featuring two crossed hockey sticks, lying on a red with white trim background surrounded by a blue with silver trim oval containing two stars anchoring the words "Columbus Blue Jackets." The image became a favorite with fans and established an important visual link to the history behind the club's name when it was introduced during the 2003-04 season as part of the club's "Tied & True" third jersey launch. The name "Blue Jackets" pays homage to Ohio's contributions to American history and the great pride and patriotism exhibited by its citizens, especially during the Civil War as the state contributed more of its population to the Union Army than any other and many of the uniforms worn by the Union Army were manufactured in Columbus.
The introduction of the mark caps a process that began over a year ago. Official team merchandise featuring the new logo will be available on Friday, while Blue Jackets jerseys with the new shoulder patch will be available for sale at all FOX Sports Ohio Blue Line locations and other retailers beginning in September.
