Blaine Gabbert comes out strong ... then leaves hurt
By Sid Saraf, FOXSports.com It's almost not fair. We've been waiting to see if Jaguars quarterback Blaine Gabbert would figure things out as he heads into his third NFL season. During Saturday's preseason game against the Jets, we saw some stuff out of the sandy-haired Gabbert to possibly give Jacksonville hope. Then that hope took a hit. Gabbert was forced to leave the game in the second quarter when the thumb on his throwing hand hit the helmet of a Jets player. Trainers heavily wrapped the injured digit.
It's a shame because Gabbert's first drive was something special. He started by hitting Ace Sanders for 35 yards. Then he found Will Ta'ufo'ou for another 10 and Maurice Jones-Drew (making his preseason debut) for 20. Two players later Gabbert connected with Allen Reisner for a 5-yard touchdown pass.
The Jags QB put together another scoring drive on his next possession, directing a 13-play, 95-yard drive that ended with a Josh Scobee field goal. Gabbert's final stat line: 13-of-16 passes for 163 yards and a touchdown. Granted, all this came against the Jets, a team with tons of issues all over its roster. But still, it was encouraging to see some positive things out of Gabbert. As far as his injury, we'll have to wait and see. We here at Laces Out hope it's nothing bad and that he can get back on the field soon. Questions? Comments? Send them to lacesoutmail@gmail.com and we might respond in our weekly mailbag!
