Bass, Wieland move into Padres rotation

Right-handers Anthony Bass and Joe Wieland will be moving into the Padres' rotation over the next three games, and they could be there for a while.

Right-hander Dustin Moseley, on the 15-day disabled list with a right shoulder strain, is a candidate both for shoulder surgery and the 60-day DL, according to the team.

As for Tim Stauffer, manager Bud Black on Wednesday said it will be at least three weeks before the right-hander will be ready to rejoin the rotation.

Bass, 24, will make his first start Thursday night against Arizona in Moseley's slot in the rotation. Wieland, 22, is being promoted from Class AAA Tucson to face the Dodgers on Saturday night in the No. 5 slot in the rotation.

Black spoke about extent of Moseley's right shoulder issues Wednesday.

"Dustin is just getting his emotions in order to make the right decision as it relates to his career," Black said. "He wants to be informed about the best course of action. There is no urgency to make a decision right now. Surgery is a possibility.

"I do know that there is damage to the rotator cuff and changes to the labrum. The MRI showed more than minimal damage."

The damage to the labrum is said to be beyond fraying.

Moseley said Wednesday he needed a few more days before making any decisions because one alternative at the moment is rehabbing the injury for up to two months to see if that corrects the problem. However, if rehabbing the injury fails and surgery is required, a two-month delay could jeopardize Moseley being ready for the start of the 2013 season.
