Badgers blank NMU to split series in Green Bay
One night after a furious third-period rally resulted in an overtime loss, the Wisconsin Badgers established their dominance early on Saturday, cruising to a 4-0 win over Northern Michigan in Green Bay, Wis.
Ryan Wagner opened up the scoring with a slick power-play goal in the first period. That was followed up by a Will Johnson score to open up the second frame, courtesy of a sneaky pass in front of the net by Cameron Hughes.
Hughes found himself in the score sheet once again when he tallied a goal later in the second period. Freshman Linus Weissbach completed the scoring with a one-timer that found the back of the net with 6:21 to play.
“It just goes to show you, when we play like we want to play and we do the things that we want to do, we’re a good team and we just have to have that effort for Friday and Saturday nights," Hughes said.
Wisconsin set the tone early, outshooting NMU 13-3 after one period and 43-11 in total. The Badgers killed off all five penalties, including a 5-on-3 that lasted just under two minutes.
Goaltender Jack Berry earned his second career shutout in the win.
The Badgers will take their 5-2 overall record back to the Kohl Center next weekend for a two-game series against St. Lawrence.
